Dispatchers are asked to contact the Duty Officer (Sam this month) at the beginning of shift to confirm that the squad is in operation.
Operations Reminders
- Check out sheets for the ambulance and equipment are to be completed at the beginning of each shift.
- Please empty the trash from the ambulance at the end of each shift.
Fund Drive
15,000 envelopes were stuffed and labeled by the FEGS group at the Samuel Field Y for the Annual Building Fund Drive mailing. This mailing was sent out in May. Collections so far:
- June 2006: 346 Responses, yielding $8,226.00 in donations
- July 2006: 103 Responses, yielding $2,622.00 in donations
- August 2006: 50 Responses, yielding $1,133.00 in donations
Grants
- Application for $3,000 grant secured by NYC Councilman David I. Weprin has been received.
- $33,680 US Government Assistance to Firefighters [and EMS] Grant to the squad was announced 8/19/05. Funds were used for EMS equipment, PPE and Wellness and Fitness programs. Approximately $14,007 has been awarded. This grant closed on August 4, 2006.

Special Event Crews Needed
- NYC Century Bike Tour – Sunday 9/10/06
This event introduces riders to a fun, safe, environmentally sound way to get around the city. Transportation Alternatives Inc. provides riders with food, water, medical help, and bike repair at five rest stops along the route. No streets will be closed for the tour The ride begins at the top of Central Park and takes riders through Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, with rest stops at: Central Park’s Harlem Meer, Empire-Fulton Ferry Park, Prospect Park, Canarsie Pier, Kissena Park in Flushing, Queens, Astoria Park and Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.
Our volunteer EMT’s receive free food the day of the event, a Transportation Alternatives t-shirt, an invitation to a volunteer party, and an official thank-you in the T.A. magazine. - Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk – 10/15/06
5 mile walk starts and ends at Queens Borough Hall on Queens Boulevard.
Registration on-site begins at 9:15am, walk begins at 11:00am, is usually over by 1:00pm.

- Saturday, August 12, 2006 St. Johns University Charity Basketball Game. Daniel Tyroler, Hyoung Yoon, Youth Corps Captain Brandon King, Jennifer Bido, Devin Friedland and Captain Daryl Mazlish were on hand for the standby. There were no patients at this event in need of treatment.
- Monday, August 28, 2006, Queens Symphony Orchestra at St. John’s University. James Downey, Hyoung Yoon and Captain Mazlish were on hand for the standby. There were no patients at this event in need of treatment.

- West Queens Emergency Medical Training Institute is offering:
EMT-B REFRESHER, 9/30/06 to 12/14/07, Saturdays, 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The first four classes are mandatory for all participants. Other classes will be required for those whose written and/or practical exam scores are below the required standard. CPR Training
The new American Heart Protocols (“2005 Protocols”) are out. As per orders from the NY State Dept of Health, all riding members must be updated to the new protocols by December 31 2006.
Sign up sheets for classes will be in the dispatch area. The classes are free to members and associates.
Included in the 2005 Protocols are changes to the following:
- What constitutes an adult versus a child
- Hand position
- Changes to blind finger sweeps
- Compression sequence changes (30:2 versus 15:2)
- Infant CPR
- Procedures for witnessed arrest and drowning victims
- AED procedures
- Recovery position

In Memoriam
WILLIAM WHITE: former squad member and BOD member, on August 9, due to complications from diabetes. Bill was a long time EMS volunteer working both at GOVAC and JEHSBVAC. He was also a member of Queens County REACT. He served his city as a member of NYC EMS (FDNY EMS) where he served as an EMT and held the rank of Lieutenant.
